In July 2019 we welcomed Remco Ploeg, a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP), into the role of Chief Technology Officer, Europe for Altius. We took the opportunity to talk to Remco about his new role, his experience and his plans for our European operation.
What attracted you to Altius?
I was introduced to Altius and told about the opening of a CTO Europe position by a Microsoft representative. The more I looked into Altius and the more I learned about the role, the more excited I got. Most Microsoft partners have a broad proposition, and the fact that Altius has a focused specialism – data, really appealed. Data, data science and analytics – it’s the future and it affords organisations so many opportunities. I was very impressed with what Altius is doing from a business and technical perspective with data. It’s a very exciting time to get involved.
What’s your background?
For the last 15 years I’ve been working in Microsoft partner organisations. I set up my own partner organisation in 2011. I sold this five years ago, and then went back to my Solution Architect role, which involved helping customers with their IT strategy. I have always had a strong focus on IoT and big data to help customers be disruptive in their own market, so stepping into the CTO role at Altius, a data focused company, felt like a natural fit and a good next step.

What are your plans as CTO Europe?
Altius Europe is based in the Netherlands and has some really exciting and progressive projects on the go. We’re working with one of the biggest retailers in the Netherlands on some very disruptive technology, as well as a data platform strategy and implementation project for a global logistics company. We’re also working with a group of companies in the field of technology construction and infrastructure. on a strategy project with a focus on IoT and predictive analytics.
The fact that our team in the Netherlands works closely with our colleagues in Pune and in the UK, means that we can capitalise on all that experience and expertise. We’ve got some incredibly highly skilled people and I’m excited about the opportunity of growing our Netherlands team, in terms of people, capabilities, clients and revenue.
Is the Netherlands office recruiting?
Yes and we recognise that it’s a very competitive job market in the Netherlands. But for the right person, Altius offers excellent opportunities and prospects. We want people who are in love with technology, especially the Microsoft Azure environment, and who are passionate about keeping up-to-date with the latest innovations. We’ve got roles for Microsoft developers, architects, consultants, and data science and implementation people, but we’re looking for a certain type of individual. We need people with the confidence and ability to speak to C-suite level customers, and who are willing to be open and share their knowledge. In return they will be given autonomy within their role and enjoy an open culture that’s focused on helping everyone develop and thrive.
The team here in the Netherlands is growing fast. I’m excited to be on board and looking forward to building the practices and the client base. I love data and new technology and to be able to share that with people. And I love working closely with customers and building a business. For me this is the perfect role.”
